Episode 2: Pottery-Making

We created a series on Youtube introducing Center Pottery, as well as the art of pottery-making to those interested in what we do. If you are interested, you can check out the full series here

You can make a variety of things with clay, but there are two main methods to do so:

1. Handbuilding

Handbuilding is the most basic method to work with clay, but it is also the foundation of pottery. In handbuilding, there are also various techniques to master, and this includes pinching, coiling, as well as slab building. You can find out more about handbuilding here.

2. Wheel-throwing

Wheel-throwing requires a potter’s wheel to make pieces. Although it may seem much easier than handbuilding, which requires a lot of time and patience, it actually demands more skill and technique. Many potters train years and years before being able to throw large pieces.

After making your pieces, they will be left to dry before bisque-firing. They will then be glazed before being fired in the kiln for the second time.

In this episode, you will get a glimpse of these two methods, and the process in which the pieces have to go through before it is completed.
