Happy Chinese New Year from us at Center Pottery! Vermilion red, the colour of the bowl above, traditionally symbolizes happiness and prosperity, and is the color of blood, and thus of life. That is why red is our color of choice for every Chinese New Year!

In this time of reflection upon the previous year and the one to come, we are in a poetic sort of mood, and wish to share one of Bai Juyi’s poems. 新年快乐!

Remembering Jiangnan


Jiangnan is good

It’s scenery has long been known by all.

Sun comes out and river flowers burn vermillion red

Spring arrives and river's green turns blue

How can one forget Jiangnan?


 

Jiangnan memories

I most remember Hangzhou

Mountain temples in moonlight, seeking talented men

Sleeping in River Tower, watching a tidal bore roll in

When will I wander there again?

Next most, I remember Wu Palace

A cup of Wu wine, new leaves of spring bamboo

Two lovely, young Wu dancers, getting drunk, lotuses

Sooner or later, we will meet again
