Last Saturday, 13th January 2018, was a very eventful one as Center Pottery took part in the inaugural SG Cares Carnival. A celebration on a large-scale, this carnival in Our Tampines Hub brought together an array of social enterprises and community groups to highlight their efforts in nurturing a culture of caring in Singapore.
The wide-ranging display—from special needs, arts, and language groups—was a great testament to the variety of social causes that are gaining visibility in Singapore. Through interactive activities that put values into hands-on action, the event also showed the impact we can make with everyday acts of care.
To get the public involved, Center Pottery gave live demos of wheel throwing and
invited kids and adults alike to try their hand at this technique throughout the day. We also had a space for mini hand-building workshops for those who wanted to mold something of their own to take home. Above all, it was the many conversations we shared with the public about our art therapeutic mission that made the activities so meaningful.
Beyond building up beautiful pieces, the demos and trials also emphasized the aspect of mindfulness that comes with finding one’s center through the wheel, or
through embracing the messy tactility of clay. It is this element that adds value to our work with mental health patients and other populations, for whom clay art therapy can be another mode of expression and a therapeutic tool. We hope that those who experienced those techniques in the carnival also got a moment of pleasure and respite for themselves!
Finally, the Center Pottery team would like to thank SG Cares and Mediacorp for
organizing this event. We look forward to the next one!
