Located near Pioneer in the Western end of Singapore in the complex of the Jalan Bahar Clay Studios, our pottery studio is located near the last two Dragon Kilns in Singapore, and in one of the few rural places left in modern Singapore.

The quiet serenity of the surrounding nature, interrupted only by hushed voices and the swing of fan blades makes our studio an ideal place for anyone to calm their minds and de-stress as we learn from the teachers and form our creations on the pottery wheels.

Though pottery has been experiencing a revival in Singapore in recent years, partly through people wanting to create their own unique pieces, which are also functional, rather than grabbing something off the shelf.

The last two remaining Dragon Kilns in Singapore are what ultimately makes it possible for these pieces to become functional, food-safe and last for decades to come. There is a rigourous process to bringing the ‘Dragon’ to life, including heating the kiln to 1250°C before changing it to the desired temperature, which must then be maintained for anywhere between 12 and 24 hours.

That is another way in which pottery can help the mentally challenged and the elderly, by giving them a way to leave something physical that will stand the test of time, and serve as a reminder of their efforts and hard work. An elderly participant once remarked that his finished creation was “not pretty”, but his opinion changed once our founder, Joan, told him that that was the only piece in the entire world that he had created, and that made it special and unique.

This is how we at Center Pottery aim to help, by changing the perspectives of our participants and giving them a positive outlet to do with as they please.
